Located in the quiet suburb of New City, New York, this stylish pool cabana is ready to provide year-round entertainment for the young family that lives here.
The homeowners worked with ROAM Architecture to design a versatile space for cooking, grilling, dining, watching TV, and relaxing. They reached out to ActivWall to custom manufacture several products for the cabana, including Folding Doors, Gas Strut Windows, and Fixed Panels to complete the 500 square foot space.
Amy Nowak of ROAM Architecture said, “We were excited to work with this family to create an indoor-outdoor entertaining space that could transition from an open-air summer cabana to a cozy indoor space during the shoulder spring and fall seasons.”
She added, “Our climate in the northeast makes the outdoor swimming season relatively short and limited to July and August, but the inclusion of the Folding Doors and Gas Strut Windows allows the homeowners to utilize their backyard space for an additional six months out of the year.”
The ActivWall products are made of thermally-broken aluminum with insulated glass for energy efficiency. The system keeps the hot air out in summer and the cold air out in winter when closed.
The Folding Doors installed on two walls help to create a flexible space. When the family entertains, they can open up the doors partially or fully, depending on the space needed.
The door facing the pool is a five-panel unit that measures 207″ wide by 96″ high. To the right side of the cabana, a three-panel system is used that measures 126″ wide by 96″ high.
On the left side of the cabana, two Gas Strut Windows are used to create a serving bar that the family can enjoy from the inside or outside. Pool guests can easily pull up a bar stool outside the cabana to see the tv and converse with others inside. The Gas Strut Windows are 108″ wide by 51″ high.
To complete the space, ActivWall designed four Fixed Panels of various widths to enclose the structure’s corners without blocking visibility. All eight units installed in the cabana are finished in a dark bronze powder coat for a contemporary look.
Amy noted that this construction project was completed just a few months before the COVID restrictions went into effect. She explained, “this pool house allowed our clients to gather with friends and family in a safe and well-ventilated outdoor room. No one could have predicted the project’s use in this way, of course, but having lived through the pandemic, we’ve seen a real increase in demand for flexible indoor-outdoor settings. Products such as those manufactured by ActivWall have allowed us to design freedom and flexibility into our designs.”
