Seamless Kitchen Connection

Gas Strut Window in project by Douglas Fossum Construction

When Douglas Fossum Construction set out to create a kitchen that fully embraces its California surroundings, the goal was more than simply bringing in natural light. The design called for a seamless connection between the interior kitchen and an outdoor entertaining space. They wanted something that could transform the countertop into a gathering spot with views extending beyond the home.

The solution was a custom ActivWall Gas Strut Window measuring 96″ wide x 47″ high.

This oversized, outswing Gas Strut Window was custom-built with thermally broken aluminum, insulated glass, and a sleek black powder-coat finish. Matching black hardware completes the look, creating cohesive details that complement the home’s architectural finishes.

The window was also designed with an optional nailing flange to help simplify installation and provide greater flexibility during the building process.

But one of the most important details is found at the sill.

The window features a flush sill, allowing the interior kitchen counter to flow smoothly through the opening toward the exterior deck. The result is a clean, uninterrupted counter surface that makes passing food, drinks, and conversation between the kitchen and outdoor space effortless.

While the sill creates a smooth transition, it doesn’t sacrifice performance. The design incorporates a thermal break with weep holes to help protect against air and water, making the opening practical for everyday use while maintaining the sleek appearance the project called for.

The kitchen counter extends beyond the window opening to create a dedicated outdoor counter space. With room for barstools on the deck side, the counter becomes a natural place to sit, enjoy a meal, or simply take in the views.

Beyond the counter is an outdoor dining area and the fantastic California scenery, making this Gas Strut Window much more than an opening between two spaces. When open, it becomes part of the home’s entertaining experience.

It’s a great example of how a custom window can be designed around the way a space will actually be used—bringing together function, architectural style, and indoor-outdoor living in one solution.

Whether you’re designing a residential kitchen, outdoor entertaining area, or another space where indoor and outdoor environments need to connect, ActivWall can create a custom Gas Strut Window to fit your project.
