A once-dark and dated kitchen in Washington state has been transformed into a light-filled, welcoming space thanks to a visionary renovation by Cortney Smith of Torgy’s Design Build. This project exemplifies thoughtful design and smart functionality, anchored by a striking ActivWall Gas Strut Window that connects the indoors with the beautiful outdoor living area.
“This kitchen remodel was all about turning a dark, dated space into an open, welcoming hub for a busy family who loves to gather,” said Smith, a Custom Home Interior Design + Build Contractor. “One of the biggest layout changes we made was removing an awkward wall that once divided the kitchen from the main living area. The goal was to open up the space, enhance indoor-outdoor living, and create a high-functioning layout.”
That goal came to life in a big way with the addition of a 120″ wide by 43.75″ high ActivWall Gas Strut Window, featuring a raised sill and a stylish dual-tone powder coat finish—white on the interior and black on the exterior. The window opens upward and outward with the support of commercial-grade gas struts, capturing expansive views while allowing fresh air and light to pour into the home.
“One of the standout features is the ActivWall Gas Strut Window, which opens outward to capture the stunning view and pool below,” Smith shared. “This not only brings in natural light but creates a seamless connection to the outdoors—perfect for passing food and drinks during gatherings on the patio.”
An optional Pull Hook was added to help close the oversized window from the interior, making it easy for homeowners to operate it daily.
Inside the kitchen, Smith designed a space that balances modern performance with warm, rustic charm. Moss green cabinetry grounds the design with earthy sophistication, while Sub-Zero appliances bring high-end functionality. The kitchen island boasts a honed quartz countertop with a chiseled edge, offering a sculptural focal point that contrasts beautifully with the room’s clean lines.
Another standout element is the set of custom alder floating shelves with integrated LED lighting—a practical and beautiful way to display daily essentials and treasured pieces alike.
“We’re grateful to have partnered with ActivWall on this project,” said Smith. “Their gas strut window was a game-changer in bringing both beauty and function to the heart of this home.”
This renovation is a shining example of how thoughtful design—and the right architectural features—can completely reinvent a space for modern living.
