Lake House in North Carolina

Lake House with ActivWall Horizontal Folding Door

At the beginning of the pandemic, Jerry and Cheryl Pickler of North Carolina took a leap of faith to create their own slice of paradise. They purchased property on the shore of High Rock Lake and made plans to build their dream home. The property had an existing structure that had fallen into disrepair over the years. The Picklers were up to the challenge as they removed the former home and started with a clean slate.

Jerry is a North Carolina licensed contractor and the owner of JWP Construction. The couple knew they wanted lots of natural light in the home and a way to open up outdoor living and entertaining spaces. After a search online, they discovered the ActivWall Folding Door and found that they are manufactured less than two hours away in Martinsville, Virginia.

When considering the product, Jerry and Cheryl planned a visit to tour the ActivWall production facility and learn more about each product’s quality materials and craftsmanship.

After meeting staff and getting to handle the thermally broken aluminum and proprietary hardware used, the Picklers were sold. They ordered a white four-panel unit in a one left – 3 right outswing configuration.

The custom-manufactured door measures 168″ wide by 96″ high and features a sill that is flush on the interior and a saddle sill on the exterior. Jerry chose to fully recess the sill into his flooring to ensure accessibility for family members who use wheelchairs.

The door provides versatility as it can be used in various ways. The left panel can be opened by itself for a daily use swing door. Two panels can be folded back for a partial opening, and all four panels can be opened for full access to the deck.

The door is made with double-paned insulated glass for maximum energy efficiency and comes with a 10-year residential warranty.

In addition to the ActivWall Folding Door, the Picklers added many unique features to their custom home, serving as a model home for their construction firm.

Cable railings on the deck provide safety without compromising the scenic lake views. Aquor Wall Hydrants provide frost-free exterior access to water with a low profile as there is no protruding spigot or knob. An LED kitchen faucet immediately lets the Picklers see the temperature of their water, and a camouflaged flat-screen TV allows them to enjoy favorite shows when they want while blending in as a decorative mirror when not in use.
