Restaurant with Gas Strut Windows
Firewater Kitchen

Lakeside Dining

Located on the shore of Deep Creek Lake in Maryland, Firewater Kitchen & Bar is the perfect spot to sip on a cocktail and catch up with old friends. The unique restaurant provides a relaxed and contemporary atmosphere with rustic details like natural wood, stacked stone, and fireplaces. It is accessible via boat from May through October and is just a short drive from Wisp Resort.

To fully enjoy the expansive views of Deep Creek Lake from the inside, ActivWall had the privilege to custom build 14 Gas Strut Windows for the project. Doug Storck of DCL Design Studio chose four different size ActivWall windows for this project.

The windows were finished in a dark bronze powder coat with insulated glass, and each window unit has a raised saddle sill for all-weather protection against the elements.

Doug explained, “ActivWall Gas Strut Windows are a key element in the biophilic design of Firewater Kitchen and Bar. The restaurants interconnection between interior and exterior space, place and environment through natural light, fresh air and social connection is a direct attribute of the design and functionality of these windows.”

The innovative Gas Strut Windows by ActivWall lift up and out on sturdy struts to enhance air circulation, create convenient serving windows for staff, and provide unobstructed lake views.

Jeany Blamble, the General Manager of Firewater Kitchen, said, “The windows are a fabulous addition to our restaurant! There is a real WOW factor when our guests see them opening.” The windows open out to a 1,700 sq. ft. patio that features heated pavers and a 32′ linear fireplace for spring and fall dining.

ActivWall Gas Strut Windows are made for commercial and residential use. They feature impact-resistant glass, energy-efficient aluminum frames, sturdy hardware, and a comprehensive warranty.

The product has also been impact tested for locations in hurricane zones. Click below to request a quote for your unique space.

Kitchen Renovation in Marietta, Georgia

Kitchen Renovation in Marietta, Georgia

When Melissa Douglas purchased a new home in Marietta, Georgia, one of the things that drew her family to the house was the outdoor screen porch. “We love using it,” she said.

The original kitchen window separated the inside and the porch, so Melissa added that to her project list when planning a kitchen renovation. According to Melissa, “One of the biggest things I wanted to accomplish was getting the indoor and outdoor space to combine and give a better flow between the two.”

Melissa considered using an accordion-style Horizontal Folding Window but did not want the kitchen to look different from the other single-pane windows on the back of her house. She also wanted a window with no track or sill for a smooth countertop.

See It In Action

She said, “We really wanted to find one window that could be used as a pass-through and, when not in use, gives us a beautiful view of the back yard with no partitions or distractions.”

While looking online for pass-through windows, Melissa found the Gas Strut Window by ActivWall. She reached out to find more information and worked with ActivWall’s engineering team to customize the perfect window for her space. With guidance from her designer Trish Wallet, Melissa opted to lower the window opening to counter height and then extended the countertops through the opening to create a bar area in the screened-in porch.

The 71″ wide by 62″ high window was manufactured in Martinsville, Virginia, and shipped directly to Melissa’s home for her contractor WellDone Remodel to install it. “Working with ActivWall was a pleasure,” she said. “From the first time I reached out, throughout the whole design process, and then fabrication, the team kept me updated on what was going on and was always available for any questions I might have.” She noted that WellDone Remodel researched the product to know how to install it and had a team ready to make the dream a reality.

The finished project provides an indoor-outdoor space for Melissa and her family to fully enjoy both our kitchen and their screen porch at the same time. She said, “We are now able to open up the window and have family and friends sit on the other side while we are cooking and get to enjoy both spaces at the same time. Our son has even nicknamed this new spot ‘Logan’s Restaurant’ as he can sit and watch us and eat as we cook.”

Melissa said, “The product is absolutely beautiful, and in a time when supply chain and pretty much everything in the world is backed up, the time from order to delivery was right on target. She added, “I feel confident that I have picked a product that will last for years to come!”

Design Features: The 71″ x 62″ AL62-GS outswing Gas Strut Window is finished in a white powder coat with no sill. The unit has insulated glass, dual white handles (to accommodate the faucet), and interior locks.

Brewery Folding Doors

Sleek ActivWall aluminum folding doors add versatility to this brewery and special events venue in South Carolina.

New Realm is an American craft brewery and distillery that started in 2016 with a flagship brewery and restaurant in Atlanta, Georgia. The business brews innovative beers based on tradition, and its strong customer following has enabled New Realm to expand to three additional locations in Savannah, Charleston, and Virginia Beach.

Guests to New Realm’s Charleston, South Carolina location enjoy incredible flavors from the wood-fired kitchen and their 27 taps that are constantly pouring New Realm’s famous IPAs, pilsners, and small-batch beers crafted by Brewmaster Mitch Steele.

The Charleston location has three private dining areas for special events and a dedicated events coordinator to assist hosts. In their large indoor area, called The Music Room, designers used two ActivWall Horizontal Door units to create movable partition walls for the versatile event space.

New Realm Brewery

The Music Room is a spacious area with a 30′ ceiling, and it can accommodate 150 guests. Features include a stage, a laser projector, and a 165″ screen. The two ActivWall doors, paired with large roll-up panels, allow the space to be configured as an open, semi-private, or private room, depending on the type of event being hosted.

The first ActivWall Horizontal Folding Door is a three-panel unit and measures approximately 123″ wide by 95″ high. The second unit has two panels and measures about 75″ wide by 95″ high. Both units have aluminum frames finished in a flat black powder coat and 1/4″ clear tempered safety glass. They are top-hung and feature two-point locking handles for securing the spaces.

ActivWall Horizontal Folding Walls, Windows, and Doors can be utilized in both commercial and residential settings as well as either exterior or interior.

Our superior American engineered hinges and motion hardware allow for the smooth operation of units, and thermally broken aluminum and dual-paned low-E glass make the AL62-HF extremely energy efficient.

Custom sizes, configurations, glass, and multiple sill options are available along with SDL (simulated divided lites or grilles) and integrated panic hardware (for commercial applications). There is also a floor-mounted system for applications where header weight support is problematic.

Taco Bell Cantina

The Taco Bell Cantina in Danville, California has elevated its dining experience beyond just fast food. The chain’s new “Cantina” concept features an urban restaurant design, open kitchen, custom menu with shareable appetizers and alcoholic beverages.

The renovation was led by Infinity AP of Waveland, Mississippi and First Street Development of Sonoma, California who added a welcoming outdoor dining area with cozy seating, fire pits, outdoor lawn games, and large screens for sporting events.

We are thrilled to be part of this location as two ActivWall Gas Strut Windows were used in the restaurant design. The 57″ wide aluminum units connect the bar inside to the outdoor dining area and open up to create an outdoor bar where guests can enjoy beer, wine, sangria, and twisted Freezes.

Franklin Motors Beer Garden

When the owners of Franklin Motors Beer Garden and Roquette began planning designs for a new two-story beer garden with a food truck in the college town of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, they knew that they wanted a pass-through window at the bar for serving guests.

They turned to Coastal Window & Door of Wilmington to purchase a custom-built ActivWall Gas Strut Window. The unit measures 62.75″ wide by 36″ high and is finished in a red powder coat that coordinates with an eclectic mix of vintage automotive and industrial decor found throughout the venue.

For example, they mounted the beer taps on a vintage Gulf Oil barrel just inside the window for a quirky yet functional pouring station.

The custom-made ActivWall window opens up and out 90 degrees on gas struts to create a serving bar. The window can be closed with a push from the outside or the inside using the optional ActivWall Pull Hook.

Carrie Brogren, founder of the Chapel Hill Carrboro Foodies, visited Franklin Motors during their soft-opening.

She said, “It’s such a great space! Indoors, outdoors, downstairs, upstairs, sitting, standing – this place has got it all! It’s obvious that a lot of time and effort went into the layout and design. They’ve got beer, wine, cocktails, and they even plan to offer Prosecco on tap (not available just yet, but will be soon).”

Upstairs, above the ActivWall Gas Strut Window, patrons have various seating options surrounded by colorful flowers, unique industrial elements, and bistro lights.

Roquette is a permanent food truck on-site and serves lunch and dinner. Carrie said, “We really enjoyed the food…the menu is casual but fresh and tasty. The ceviche was my favorite, but the sliders were a close second, and I like that you can mix and match flavors in sets of threes (we got cheeseburger, veggie, and fish).”

Indoor-Outdoor Living in Clarksburg, Maryland

When Jason Dubin, owner of Ambition Custom Homes, was designing a new home for his family in Clarksburg, Maryland, he knew he wanted to incorporate an ActivWall Gas Strut Window into the build.

Jason worked with the ActivWall sales team to order a 60″ wide by 54″ high Gas Strut Window custom finished in chestnut bronze to match the rest of the home’s windows. The energy-efficient unit is thermally broken aluminum with Argon-filled LowE glass and comes with a 10-year residential warranty.

According to Jason, “We had a great experience working with [ActivWall] through the design and purchasing process. We received pricing and drawings quickly. And we were able to talk through the options in regards to how the window would be installed.”

Dubin Home
Gas Strut Window

Inside the kitchen, the window offers a gorgeous view of the rear yard and forest as you stand at the main sink. Other features in the kitchen include 150-year-old reclaimed timbers from Maryland barns, corbels from Baton Rouge, handmade cedar beams, and custom cabinetry.

The top of the window is seven feet high when open, so the Dubin family uses the optional ActivWall Pull Hook (available for purchase) to close the window easily.

Outside of the window, there is a bar ledge for stool seating or staging of food/supplies from the kitchen/grill area.

Jason said, “We absolutely love the action and how this window opens up the space between our indoor kitchen and the outdoor space, which includes the outdoor kitchen and grill area.”

He added, “We are not only able to open up the wall for fresh air, but also converse with guests outdoors, pass food and other items through easily from one space to the other, and it’s simply a WOW! factor.”

All ActivWall Gas Strut Windows are custom-built and can be finished in any color. Contact us today to request a quote for your unique space!

AvtivWall Gas Strut Window - Home by Sun Bay Builders

The Perfect View of Tampa Bay

For the owners of this Venetian Island home, bringing in natural light, embracing the scenic views of Tampa Bay, and building an outdoor kitchen area were important factors when planning a renovation.

Sun Bay Builders of St. Petersburg led the project, which also included an update to the front elevation of the transitional-style waterfront home.

Although there is an exterior sliding door in the adjacent dining area, the homeowners chose to install an ActivWall Gas Strut Window over the sink to make it easy to pass items through to the outdoor kitchen area.

The innovative window opens up and out 90 degrees on gas struts to create a serving bar and pass-through window.
